Welcome to the Adversaria: Notes on the Way

In the traditions of the Renaissance and the early modern era, scholars and thinkers often kept what were known as Adversaria. These were not polished manuscripts or formal treatises, but rather digital commonplace books: collections of miscellaneous notes, theological reflections, and observations gathered “on the way.”

That is exactly what this space is intended to be.

Why “Adversaria”?
Theology and missiology are often treated as distinct academic subjects, confined to separate spheres of the classroom or the library. However, I believe that the study of God and the movement of His people are inextricably linked. As Christopher Wright so poignantly observes:

“There should be no theology that does not relate to the mission of the church – either by being generated out of the church’s mission or by inspiring and shaping it. And there should be no mission of the church carried on without deep theological roots in the soil of the Bible. No theology without missional impact; no mission without theological foundations.”

This space is dedicated to exploring that vital connection. It is a place for capturing the reflections that emerge when we allow the “soil of the Bible” to nourish the work of the church in the world. This blog is a place for:

Theological Reflections: Deep dives into the nature of God and His Word.

Missiological Inquiry: Examining how we faithfully participate in God’s mission in a globalized world.

Cultural Observations: Notes on how the Gospel interacts with, challenges, and heals the cultures we inhabit.

A Shared Journey
A blog called “Adversaria” is, by definition, a work in progress. It is an invitation to think out loud. My hope is that the notes shared here will serve as a resource for pastors, practitioners, and students who are wrestling with the same questions.

You will also find a Recommended Reads section and a Resources page on the menu above. These are living documents—bibliographies of the books and tools that have shaped my own thinking and that I believe will be of value to you.
